Starting from the group stage of the African Champions League and the Confederation Cup

The African Football Confederation (CAF) announced a long-awaited historic step in the development of the continental refereeing system, after officially approving the use of Video Assistant Referee technology (VAR) starting from the group stage of the African Champions League and the African Cup (Confederation). This move comes in response to repeated demands from major clubs on the continent to ensure refereeing fairness and reduce impactful errors in crucial match results.

Details of the CAF decision

The application of video technology in previous seasons was almost entirely limited to advanced knockout stages starting from the quarter-finals or semi-finals, due to logistical challenges and the costs of operating equipment in some stadiums. The new decision requires all stadiums hosting group stage matches to provide the necessary infrastructure to operate the technology, reflecting the seriousness of the CAF referees committee in enhancing refereeing efficiency and providing competitions that match the marketing and fan value of African football.

Ending refereeing controversies and protecting the rights of major clubs

Many giants of the continent such as Al Ahly, Zamalek, Esperance, Sundowns, and Wydad have suffered in previous editions from controversial refereeing decisions in the group stage, some of which had a direct role in changing the course of qualification:

  • Reducing serious errors: intervening in cases of unawarded penalties, difficult offside situations, and direct red cards.
